Wicklow GAA Strategic Vision & Action Plan

In line with the initiative taken by the Wicklow GAA to put to-gether a nine year plan for the county, each club have been invited to produce a Development Plan, the target for 2012 would be ten clubs. Ashford GAA Club under the directorship of Vice Chairperson Pat Doyle will undertake to design a plan of action with targets for implementation. One of the recommendations from the Wicklow GAA Strategic & Action Plan that I would like to see implemented: That a Fixtures Plan for all Adult Games be implemented with an agreed minimum number of games per year for each grade, this action is the responsibility of the CCC and Clubs, to be completed in 2012 and reviewed annually.

ASHFORD GAA CLUB NOTES 07/04/2012

Ashford collected two valuable points in the County Football League Division 2 at Ashford on Friday when they defeated Valleymount 2-8 to 1-5. Ashford took the game to Valleymount from the kick off, led 1-4 to 0-3 at the interval, dominated the second half but allowed Valleymount to claw themselves back into the game. With six minutes remaining Ashford led by one point 1-6 to 1-5 and we were looking at a grandstand finish, however the home team took complete control and finished with 1-2 without reply. Ashford was afforded the luxury of shooting twelve wide’s in the game. This was a big improvement on the last game against St. Patricks and the return of Niall Mooney in defence after nearly a two year absence was a welcome boost for the club. On his first half performance alone Jay Taylor would have to be man of the match scoring 1-2, Jay had suffered a bad injury in game against St. Patricks but made a good recovery for this game. Will Hender Phillips again played well making important saves at crucial parts of the game. The Ashford defence were in control led by Wes Manning at full back, Billy Clarkson was at his best with many surging runs through the Valleymount defence. They were well supported by Lee Kavanagh and Niall Mooney. David Nolan and Conor Behan gave 100% at midfield. Along with Jay Taylor, Conor Dowling was in excellent form and they were supported by Dean Mooney and Mick Taylor.

Ashford Team: Will Hender Phillips, Brian Fagan, Wes Manning, Ken O’Brien, Niall Mooney, Billy Clarkson, Lee Kavanagh, Conor Behan, David Nolan (0-2), Conor Dowling (0-1), Jay Taylor (1-2), Mick Taylor, Alan Byrne (1-2), Dean Mooney (0-1), Brian Shannon. Subs, Sean Doyle.

Anthony Nolan was referee and it was refreshing that Anthony brought his four umpires for the game. We wish Anthony every success in his inter county campaign.

Ashford played their first game in the County Football League Division 2 away to St. Patricks. Ashford lost the game 4-9 to 1-11. The teams were level at half time 1-5 to 0-8. Ashford had controlled most of the first half and should have been well ahead at the break but for the six wides from good scoring positions. They also lost their influential player Jay Taylor midway through the first half with an ankle injury. Ashford dominated the early exchanges in the second half and led by 2 points after ten minutes. However the stronger and more physical St. Patricks team took control of the last quarter and finished comfortable winners. Will Hender Phillips showed his quality in goal with some good saves and could not be faulted for any of the goals. In defence Wes Manning making a return to the Intermediate Team along with Billy Clarkson, Gavin Weir and Lee Kavanagh played well. Conor Behan gave a workmanlike performance at midfield and was rewarded for his efforts with an great goal. Up front Aaron Nugent was excellent and would be a contender for Man of the Match, Aaron scored six points. David Nolan, Conor Dowling and Jay Taylor also played well.
