County Under 16 Football League
Ashford defeated Kilmac/Enniskerry 3-13 to 2-7 in the first round of the
County U16 Football League.

This was the Conor and Ross show, Conor
Cunningham and Ross Quinn between them scored 2-6. Conor was the perfect
link man between defence and attack, Conor scored the goal of the match
running from mid field with the ball and scoring a great goal. Tommy scored
1-5 from play and although off the field for 15 minutes with an injury, he
still managed to make a massive impact on the game. Ashford led 1-6 to 0-1
at half time. After 10 minutes of the second half Kilmac/Enniskerry had
scored 4 points without reply and were dominating the game. Ashford steadied
the ship, Colm Copeland made good saves at crucial times. Mark Cullinane,
Robert Clarkson and Rian Sweetman Burke were playing well in defence.
Kilmac/Enniskerry were good at midfield however Fergus Ward was holding his
own. Along with Ross and Conor, Colin Doyle, Oisin Murphy and Eoin Hamilton
were brilliant.
Ashford Team: Colm Copeland, Mark Cullinane, Robert Clarkson, Thomas Kearns,
Mickey Traynor, Ryan Sweetman Burke (0-2), Jack Taylor, Fergus Ward, Conor
Cunningham (1-1), Sean Duffy, Ross Quinn (1-5), Aaron Meade, Oisin Murphy
(1-2), Eoin Hamilton, Colin Doyle (0-3). Referee Anthony Nolan.
Footnote: With the score at 1-6 to 0-5 in favour of Ashford and
Kilmac/Enniskerry in control, Ashford scored a legitimate point. However the
referee ruled the point wide through no fault of his own as he did not have
the assistance of any umpires. Ashford rectified the problem immediately. In
a tight game that point could have been crucial. It is very important that
we supply officials for all our games.

Nothing Cool’ About Defeat

County Football League Division 2

Ashford suffered a heavy home defeat to Coolkenno when they were defeated by 3-9 to 0-4, Coolkenno led by 2-6 to 0-0 at half time. Most of the Coolkenno team would have won Senior Football Championship medals with St. Marys last year. Their experience with the expertise of Manager Karl O’Dwyer was too much for Ashford also Coolkenno played without the injured Paddy Dalton. Paddy has given valuable service to the county  over a number of years. As they defend their Senior Championship crown with St. Marys they will also be serious contenders for the Intermediate Football Championship. It is also worth noting that Ashford played the match without three key players, Aaron Nugent and Gavin Weir who were playing for Wicklow Minor Hurlers in the Leinster Championship also Joey Doyle who is recovering from a serious leg operation.

Wicklow Team: Will Hender Phillips, Brian Fagan, Wes Manning, Ken O’Brien, Iarla O’Donnell, Billy Clarkson, Niall Mooney, David Nolan, Conor Behan, Mick Taylor (0-2), Jay Taylor (0-1), Conor Dowling, Paddy Shannon, Dean Mooney (0-1), Brian Shannon. Subs, Philip Doyle, Daragh Rooney, David Dowling, Danny Turner.
